I joined Quartz prior to its September 2012 launch as a web applications technologist focusing on long-term product development and user experience.

Initially, my work was focused on building our custom JSON API to serve editorial and sponsored content from a WordPress backend, along with numerous plugins for editorial workflow. Later, I shifted my attention to the frontend and managed a team effort to rewrite our JavaScript application from the ground up. Within that project, I analyzed how readers used Quartz across different devices and worked with Quartz’s management team to redesign many of the site’s core user experience elements.

Quartz’s first significant user-facing update was a new mobile user experience that I designed based on insights gathered from user surveys and site analytics. This data led us to revisit fundamental pre-launch assumptions about how readers would use the site and led to multiple usability improvements.
